'Shorelines: Aldeburgh' (detail)
Ink-jet print, oil paint, silk paper thread on canvas

I use a combination of media in my work - photography, to capture the sights which inspire me; oil painting, to interpret what I see; and stitch, for emphasis and an extra textural dimension. Using this combination of media is for me, not just a way of achieving my desired visual result, but an appropriate way to explore the question 'what is art?' - a question which frequently occupied my thoughts whilst studying for my degree and was the subject of my dissertation. Could embroidery be art?

I became aware during my studies of how different levels of knowledge and understanding could influence perceptions and, to express my thoughts and feelings in this area, I used the imagery of the seashore. Knowledge, like the shore, seems fundamental, solid and apparently permanent, but nevertheless develops and changes over time. Understanding, like the surf, seems more independent, elusive and transitory. But, both are influenced by each other.

Since my degree, I have contined to use images of the seashore, but also other images that have inspired me. But the media of print, paint and embroidery remain the important constants and latterly I have included felted fibres to introduce still more texture and emphasis from the textile element of the work.
